I will always preserve my faithful love for him, and my covenant with him will endure. 29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as heaven lasts. 30 If his sons abandon my instruction and do not live by my ordinances, 31 if they dishonor my statutes and do not keep my commands, 32 then I will call their rebellion to account with the rod, their iniquity with blows. 33 But I will not withdraw my faithful love from him or betray my faithfulness. 34 I will not violate my covenant or change what my lips have said. (Psalm 89:28-34 CSB)
God’s faithfulness toward me is not dependent on my own obedience. His expectation is that I follow Him wholeheartedly, pursuing a radical and uncompromised obedience. Yet the reality is that I will (often) not get it right. I will abandon his instruction. I will not live by his ordinances but instead choose to dishonor and not keep his commandments.
But God already knew that…
This is why I need Jesus. While God cannot simply ignore my unfaithfulness, instead He chose to place the consequences of judgment upon Jesus instead of me. The rods and blows that I should have suffered because of my sin were endured by Jesus. God sent His one and only Son Jesus Christ to take my place.
This is the faithful love of God toward me. This is the gospel. This is the good news that I so desperately need!
As I walk out this journey of knowing Jesus and becoming more like Him, I do so resting in the faithfulness of God toward me. His faithfulness is not an excuse for my unfaithfulness. Instead, it is a source of joy and hope for me today.
Thank you, Jesus!
